Note: These are affiliate links. But they are products that I use or very similar to what I use. All of which have been very useful to me during my food photography journey. Which is why they are products that I trust. I have written additional information below the grid if you want to have a quick read. And if you have any questions about these products, feel free to contact me.
Canon 70d body– This is the camera I have used for nearly 3 years and I am still not done with it. It has served me well, and I think it will serve you well too, especially if it’s your first DSLR camera. If you are looking for a camera that isn’t super expensive but still want great quality images, you can’t go wrong with the Canon 70d. Also fantastic for shooting videos.
Canon 6d body– This is a full frame camera, meaning that the camera’s field of view goes to maximum width. This camera has high image quality and can focus in low light levels, which is a fantastic get out of jail card for food photography or many other styles of photography. Especially if you are like me and you shoot using natural light in an indoor environment. If you have had some previous experience, or if you are hungry to learn how to take professional food photos, this could be a great camera for you.
Sigma 105mm macro lens (for Canon)– This is the lens I use about 85% of the time. A good macro lens is one of the best investments you can make if you want to take great shots of food. Macro lenses range from 70mm to 180mm. But this lens has a medium focal length of 105mm, which means it is quite versatile as far as macro lenses go. This is a fantastic lens that will take beautiful, sharp, crisp photos when you get your subject in focus.
50mm canon lens– Like the macro lens, this is also a prime lens (meaning it doesn’t zoom in or out). If you can’t make a pricey investment on lenses at the moment, this 50mm lens is another great lens that I love to use. It has a very shallow depth of field so it can capture the subject of what you are shooting in great detail. I like to use it for the few times I go freehand. And another great thing about this lens is that it has a higher light sensitivity than a lot of other lenses so you can get away with lower light situations.
60-inch lightweight tripod– A fantastic lightweight and good quality tripod that I have always used ever since I started food photography. One that I highly recommend if you are new to photography. It’s cheap, reliable and easy to carry around.
SanDisk 32gb memory card– Now if you are taking photos on a regular basis, you won’t need an enormous amount of space. However, it isn’t something that you want to be worrying about all the time when doing a photoshoot. This is important, especially if you are shooting in RAW.
SanDisk 64gb memory card– I recently started making recipe videos and I noticed how much space the files take up. This much space may not be necessary if you are only taking pictures. But for videos, I can assure you it’ll be worth it.
Wireless Canon remote– Keep in mind that I am a canon user, so this wireless remote can only be used with Canon SLR’s. Why is this piece of equipment useful? Well, there usually isn’t someone with me when I do my photo shoots. I work by myself. And let’s say that I wanted to take a picture as I am spooning something over the food. I can’t do that if I can only take a shot from the shutter button on the camera. This is where the remote comes handy. Also, you won’t get any camera shake when you take pictures with the remote.
Lightroom– This is a fantastic piece of software. If you take a lot of photos and want to touch them up in editing. Lightroom not only allows you to make your photos look even better. It helps you to easily organise your files. I can assure you that this will save a tone of time. And will help prevent you from making a bunch of unorganized, misplaced, cluttered files that will just confuse you. If you are just starting out with editing software, Adobe Photoshop is great but can be a bit overwhelming for many users because they don’t know where to start or what to do. Lightroom is a lot simpler to learn how to use but still does a fantastic job of touching up your photos.
